Stereotypically ADHDers are seen as thoughtless and sometimes even reckless because they make impulsive decisions without considering the consequences. I’ve never really related to this despite being diagnosed with combined type ADHD (a mix of impulsive and inattentive traits) because I have always been indecisive, sometimes agonisingly so.
As a child my mum would ask my sister and I what chocolate bar we wanted from a shop. Whilst my sister would grab whatever it is she wanted and I would stand panicking, umming and ahhing for gruelling minutes, sweating at the impossible decision bestowed upon me. Now you might be thinking, Georgia, it’s a chocolate bar, it’s not that deep, just pick one. Unfortunately, that is not how my brain responds to choices - trust me, I wish it was.
Etymology
The etymology of the word decide is an interesting one. It comes from the Latin word decidere (meaning determine) from de ‘off and caedere ‘cut’. In other words, decide means to ‘cut off’.
