Demand avoidance, dirty carrots and disappointing authors.
Weekly vlog, joy list, book & film recommendations
Welcome to another end-of-the-week check in where I share the things that brought me joy this week.
A Week in My Life Vlog:
Joy List:
Currently Watching: New Amsterdam
I am obsessed with this show and have cried at every episode so far. The show - set in one of America’s oldest public hospitals - tackles real issues such as racism, police brutality, substance abuse, generational trauma and more in such an engaging and emotive way.
The characters are diverse and relatable and each episode provides Dr Max Goodwin (the new medical director) with a problem that needs to be solved along with the help of his brilliant colleagues. Their collective goal is to reform the institution's neglected and outdated facilities to treat patients.
It’s honestly so brilliant - I’ve been watching an episode or two (or three) every evening and thrilled there are 5 seasons.
Currently reading: Weirdo by Sara Pascoe
Still reading this but I’m unsure how I’m feeling about it. I feel pretty lucky that this is the first book I’ve read this year that I don’t instantly love. I’m going to persist for a few more chapters (only 90 pages in) and will keep you updated!
Currently listening to: The Little Friend by Donna Tartt
I’m finding it difficult to keep up with this book because I feel like it keep straying so far from the plot and going on random tangents. I also find it deeply uncomfortable that the N word has been used so many times in this book, also the R slur when talking about someone with intellectual disabilities. I understand it is set in the 70’s in Mississippi but it still feels unnecessary, particularly as the author is white. What are your thoughts on this?
I loved The Secret History by Donna Tartt so I want to keep going and will keep you updated!
Fake Accounts - I finished Fake Accounts by Lauren Oyler and this was my Goodreads review:
I probably wouldn’t recommend it despite the gorgeous cover. Don’t you hate it when the cover is better than the book?
Currently Loving:
My little evening Netflix routine.
Charli xcx new album - brat.
