I’m opening a bookshop.
Yes, you read that correctly.
I
AM
OPENING
A
MOTHER-
FORKING
BOOKSHOP.
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!
I know there was zero suspense or build up to that news but I am stupidly excited about this next chapter (pun intended) and wanted to document the process. And what better place to do that than here with you, you bloody marvellous patron of the arts!
Okay, where to start?
For as long as I can remember, I have always loved books. I loved reading and writing and stories and words as soon as my human body allowed me to learn those skills and absorb the magic.
I say absorb because I truly feel I become intertwined with the books I read. Almost like I myself am an amalgamation of every poem, prose and page I’ve ever read.
Books have always been my friend. They’ve been my escape from reality, my coping mechanism when my demons get too loud and a companion holding my hand as I navigate life.
I know I sound nerdy as hell right now, but I just fucking love books, okay?
The Dream
If you live on the internet, like I do, then you’ve probably come across those memes that say something along the lines of ‘the feminine urge to quit your job, move to a small town and open a bookshop that’s also a creative space for writers where you can write your first novel whilst sipping tea and live out your Rory Gilmore dreams’. Okay, so that last part I made up but you get the idea. Well…that’s what I’m doing!
The (very loose and vague) Plan
Find a suitable space.
Decorate the store.
Source furniture to create the store of my dreams.
Source books [ongoing].
Create socials, website & branding.
Spread the word.
Live out my Gilmore Girls dream.
I also plan to sell little plants, up-cycled furniture, cute trinkets, prints, and bookish merch with my logo on it (canvas bags, mugs, t-shirts etc.)
The Name
As an ADHDer I am the worst when it comes to making decisions.
When I was a kid my Mum would let me and my younger sister pick a chocolate bar when we went to the shops, as a treat. A child’s dream, ‘what could possibly go wrong?’ I hear you ask. I am SO BAD at making choices that I would frequently end up with no chocolate bar.
So I am being so serious when I say, this was a really hard decision but I have finally landed on a name: drumroll please…
Still not 100% committed to the logo design but I do love the name and it suits what I have in mind for my cosy little second hand book store.
So that’s my big news! I am beyond excited and honestly a little relieved to finally share this with you (another bonus of being a Georgia Writes subscriber as I’m not announcing this to anyone else yet - so shhh).
I’d love to know your thoughts on the name and logo - do we like it? Do you have a different idea/prefer something else? I’m open to suggestions (as long as they’re nice because my RSD can’t cope with perceived rejection, ok thanks, bye).
Thank you for reading and until next time…
