Hello you wonderful human,
Glimmer
/ˈɡlɪmə/
Glimmers are tiny micro moments of joy. They are fleeting, everyday moments that elicit a rush of happiness, gratitude, calm, peace, safety, or goodwill. 1
In this letter I want to share with you some glimmers from my week (video below) and I thought it would be fun to share what I’m loving this week in a joy list.
A Week in my Life Vlog:
Joy List:
Currently watching: The Veil.
A TV mini series following the relationship between two women playing a deadly game of truth and lies on the road to Istanbul and Paris. In this international spy thriller one woman has a secret, the other has the mission of revealing it before thousands of innocent people die.
Elizabeth Moss, best known for her role in The Handmaids Tale, is extraordinary in this exhilarating series. Her character is multifaceted; kind and brutal, guarded and reckless, fierce and fragile. Previous to this I watched Shining Girls, a thriller series also starring Elizabeth Moss, and watching them back-to-back really highlights her range as an actor. If you liked Homeland, The Veil is one to watch.
Themes: terrorism | espionage | forgiveness | trust | hidden identities
Currently reading: 10 minutes and 38 seconds in This Strange World by Elif Shafak.
I’ve just finished this glorious book and my gosh what an incredible piece of art. I haven’t read any of Shafak’s work before and I’m kicking myself for it - I can see her becoming a fast favourite. Her writing is both lyrical and raw with the most incredible use of imagery I’ve ever seen.
‘People always assumed that a corpse was no more alive than a fallen tree or a hollow stump, devoid of consciousness’.
‘She regarded her memory as a graveyard; segments of her life were buried there, lying in separate graves, and she had no intention of reviving them’.
‘Depression was common among the women on this street, tearing into their souls as fire tears into wood’.
‘Pink was fuchsia without grit; pale and lifeless as a bedsheet worn thin from too much washing’.
The novel starts at the end: Leila in a wheelie bin after being murdered. With each minute that follows her death she recalls a rich memory from her life and remembers the friends that she made along the way. It is a story of found family and identity: of sex work and love: of loss and dangerous hope. It is the profound tale of Leila’s bittersweet existence.
Themes: friendship | solidarity | exploitation of refugees | violence | family estrangement
Currently listening to: LUNCH by Billie Eilish
I adore Billie Eilish - her voice, her vibe, her music - and to no one’s surprise her new album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, is bloody marvellous. I am yet to listen to the entire album because once I heard LUNCH it was on repeat and had me gasping at each new lyric I picked up. Billie recently came out and her newfound queer identity is at the forefront of the album, particularly this song, which makes my little bisexual heart sing with joy. Listen to it loud and thank me later.
Currently loving: Elizabeth Moss (the actress in The Veil), vegan Galaxy chocolate, chocolate mug cakes, my new (second hand, sourced on Vinted) Dr Martens as shown in the pic below, going to the allotment to water the plants.
Outfit of the week:
