Hello you wonderful human,
It’s been 4 days since I stopped going on my instagram account and here’s what I’ve learnt so far:
I have so much more free time when I’m not scrolling. Just in the last few days I’ve gotten tasks done that I’ve been putting off for years (like painting my front door), spent actual quality time with my husband and enjoyed truly peaceful time in nature.
That leads me onto my second revelation: I am more present. Now that I’m not constantly doomscrolling I feel more present and grounded in real life. I have had a handful of short but lovely conversations with people in passing because instead of having my head in my phone I was looking up.
I’ve realised just how reliant I am on instagram for dopamine. As an ADHDer my brain is constantly seeking out ways I can get those quick and satisfying hits of dopamine. Instagram was an extremely easy and accessible place to get that boost. Now I’ve taken that option away my brain is feeling a little frantic in its search.
I’ve been watching a lot of shows these past few days and although I love it I’m worried I’m beginning to replace my social media scrolling with watching Netflix. I am ok with this as tv shows are a way I engage with my special interest but it’s definitely something for me to be aware of and keep an eye on.
If you missed why I am doing this social media detox you can watch my first vlog here:
Thank you for taking the time to read this post and hopefully watch my second video here. I will aim to share a vlog style video at least once a week with written posts scattered between. Some of it will be for my free subscribers and some for you wonderful paid subscribers. If you cannot afford to become a paid subscriber, recommending my substack to your friends or sharing it to your socials is a huge help and equally meaningful.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments below and I’ll get back to you when I can.
